Attitude Shaping and Shifting: “Maxim”ize Your Life

Maxims are just short pithy quotes or sayings designed to convey a truth or principle of life. I recommend collecting and storing the good ones by subject and memorizing the best ones. They will elevate your thoughts, shape your perspectives, and alter your behavior over time. Winston Churchill wrote, “Quotations, when engraved upon the memory give you good thoughts.” And Samuel Johnson, “He is a great benefactor of mankind who contracts the great rules of life into short sentences, that may easily be impressed on the memory, and so recur habitually to the mind.”

You should collect and memorize the ones that resonate and have meaning for you but here are some of my favorites:

1. List 7 ways you serve your customers and exceed their expectations.

2. List 3 things you regularly do for each associate that you work with to make them feel special.

3. How do you personalize your marketing? How often do you send a hand written note with your signature in real ink?

4. How well do you listen? Do you give customers what they want or what you think they want?

5. List 3 recent mistakes you personally made in handling a customer. How did you fix it? Was the customer satisfied? How do you know?

6. How do you treat team members who make mistakes? Give a recent example.

7. What sort of tools do you have in place to get customer feed back? What do you do with the information when you get it?

8. List 3 "New" things you've personally introduced... products, services, ways of thinking about things. How have they benefited your customer? Do you have an ongoing mindset of introducing new things that serve your customers?

9. Do you belong to any groups, formal or informal, where you exchange ideas on sales and service?
